Dr. Soumya Bhattarcharya talks on Thalassemia and its types Thalassemia is predominant in our country The Thalassemia that is more visible our country is beta Thalassemia Beta Thalassemia has three marjor types one is Beta Thalassemia Major Thalassemia Intermedia and Thalassemia trait or Thalassemia Minor Thalassemia trait or Thalassemia minor usually does not require any treatment However, in case of beta Thalassemia major the child starts getting sick from young age From the age of 7-8 months, they start showing symptoms their hemoglobin level goes down the child gets agitated they… develop a pale skin their liver and spleen starts enlarging abnormally and they need to be given blood repeatedly Many a times, hemoglobin goes down to 5 it becomes 5-6 In such situations what we do is we provide blood transfusion If we manage to keep hemoglobin between 9-10 through blood transfusion the patient can stay healthy and if the blood transfusion goes well we can save lives of these patients for long period . Due to Blood transfusion, many a times iron gets highly accumulated in the body. For reducing the iron accumlation we need to use various alkylating agents now we have very good oral alkylating pills are available so this is not a serious concern anymore In this way, we are able to save many babies affected by Thalassemia we are able to provide them a healthy life and these Thalassemia kids are growing up they are getting married and are spending quite a normal life and the way these Thalassemia patients can be cured completely is through bone marrow transplantion Through bone marrow transplantion in 80-90% cases we can heal the Thalassemia patients completely
